Scottsdale is a desert city in Arizona located east of the state capital, Phoenix, located in Maricope County. It is well-known for its spa resorts and golf courses, notably TPC Scottsdale. Trails further north wind through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a desert landscape with hills, rock formations, and cacti. Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's former house and studio, is close by. Downtown Scottsdale's Old Town Scottsdale boasts 1920s architecture and 19th-century olive trees.

Scottsdale was founded in 1894 and incorporated in 1951, with a population of 2,000 people. It was named for its founder, Winfield Scott, a former United States Army chaplain. The population in 2019 was 258,069. "The West's Most Western Town," it says.

Scottsdale is known for its sprawling, opulent resorts, championship golf courses, and high-end boutiques, but the city's heart is Old Town Scottsdale. Scottsdale is well-known for being a year-round luxury resort. The city has been regarded as a premium vacation destination due to its beautiful weather, pro-level golf courses, attractive resorts, and high-end shopping.

It is home to more than 90 restaurants, 320 retail businesses, and more than 80 art galleries. Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve, located in the city's northern extremities, is the largest urban wilderness area in the United States, with more than 60 miles of trails winding through diverse and stunning desert terrain.
