  • More About Gilbert, Arizona

Gilbert, Arizona is a city located in the southeast part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, in  Maricopa County. It's located just south of Mesa, and is known for its high quality of life and excellent schools. The city has a population of over 210,000 people, with a median age of 34 years old.

Gilbert is a youthful, prosperous community in central Arizona. Gilbert, founded on July 6, 1920, is a relatively new community that has experienced rapid expansion during the last two decades. Gilbert Historical Society photographs. Gilbert was founded in 1912 by C.C. Weeks and was originally named "Mountain View" after an early settler. The name was changed to Gilbert when it incorporated as a town in March 1921.

It's known for being an excellent place to live: it has some of the best public schools in Arizona and consistently ranks well on lists of top cities to live in by Money Magazine and US News & World Report. It also has one of the largest concentrations of jobs within two hours' drive from any other location in the country!

The Arizona Eastern Railway requested right-of-way donations in 1902 in order to create a rail connection between Phoenix and Florence. A rail siding was built on William "Bobby" Gilbert's land. Gilbert became the name of the siding and the community that sprang up around it. Gilbert was a thriving farming hamlet, propelled by the completion of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals in 1911. It remained an agricultural town for many years, and was regarded as the "Hay Capital of the World" until the late 1920s. Gilbert began to take on its modern form in the 1970s, when the Town Council accepted a strip annexation of 53 square miles of county territory. Although the population was only 1,971 in 1970, the Council recognized that Gilbert, like the adjacent cities of Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler, would eventually grow and flourish. This proved to be a foresighted decision, as Gilbert positioned itself for expansion in the 1980s and beyond.
