  • More About Glendale, Arizona

Glendale is a city in Arizona, located 15 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, in Maricopa County.

It was founded in 1892 and incorporated in 1951, but its history goes back much further than that.

The area was once home to the Hohokam people, who were known for their irrigation systems. They built dams and canals to control water levels in the Salt River Valley. In the early 20th century, the Salt River Project took control of those water resources and began using them to power electric generators. The project still supplies electricity today through SRP Energy Services—and it's one of Glendale's top employers.

Today, more than 230,000 people call Glendale home. They enjoy an average temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year, making it one of America's most comfortable cities year-round!

    Maricopa County.

Glendale was created in 1892, partly due to the Salt River Valley's lush soil, which was suitable for agriculture. Glendale was a peaceful, pious town with strong family values; it was a wonderful place to raise a family. Glendale is home to both ancient attractions like Sahuaro Ranch Park and cutting-edge entertainment venues like State Farm Stadium, which is home to the NFL's Arizona Cardinals as well as the Super Bowls in 2008, 2015, and 2023.

Glendale's name has an unknown origin. Arizona historians generally attribute the name to the city's founder, William J. Murphy, although his reasoning for choosing it has been lost to history.

Glendale was dubbed "the Gem City" in the early 1900s by Chamber of Commerce president Edward U. Emery, who stated it "sparkled like a jewel in the sun." The moniker persisted, and you can see it in places like Jewel City Bowl and Jewel City Crossfit.
